Getting there & around

Getting to the festival

BY  PLANE

There are two airports in Kyiv: Boryspil (KBP) and Zhulyany (IEV). Most international flights operate to and from Kyiv Boryspil International Airport. It is located 30km from downtown Kyiv.

Connections from Boryspil Airport:

Taxi

The average one-way fare by cab from the airport to downtown Kyiv is 100 Hrn ($20), if you book the cab in advance; but you might have to pay more. Taking a cab from the airport will cost you about 280 - 400  Hrn ($35 to $50). Just after you enter the main terminal, you'll see in front of you Information Booth and next to it - Taxi Boothes. You had better get one of their cabs. It's safer and cheaper.

Shuttle Bus

For budget travellers there is also a shuttle bus that you can catch easily right out the front terminal door off to the right. It runs approximately every 15-20 minutes during the day and 50 mins at night. It will have "Boryspil", "Polit", or "Atass" written on the side. The bus services operate 24/7. Their fare is 20 Hrn (or $2,5) to the first Metro Station "Kharkivs'ka" or for 25 Hrn ($3) to Kyiv's Southern Railway Station Terminal. The ride lasts approx. 50 min. You can look through the bus schedule of shuttle service "POLIT"here.

BY TRAIN

One can enter Ukraine by train from any land-bordering neighbour. Generally in Ukraine railway travel is much cheaper than flying, and is comparable to (but probably cheaper than) bus or car travel. The tickets are bookable within a 42 days' term prior to the departure date. Train tickets are not available earlier. 1st class (SW) sleeper is the best type of carriages in Ukraine. Each carriage has 9 cabins with 2 beds in each cabin. Each carriage has WCs with wash-stands, 2 per each carriage.

BY CAR

It is possible to get to Ukraine by car. The nearest significant town on the Polish side is Przemyśl, and it's easy to find it by following Route # 4 (which passes through Przemyśl), also known as the E40 in European terms. On the Ukrainian side it is border checkpoint named "Mostys'ka"; other important Ukrainian checkpoints on the border with Poland are Yagodyn, Ustylug (Volyn region), Rava-Ruska, and Krakivets (Lviv region). Once through the customs, just follow the main road towards Lviv on the E40 - this is the route right across Ukraine to Kyiv.

Traveling tips:

  • The signs are all in Ukrainian (Cyrillic alphabet). Only a few signs (every 200km or so) are written in the Latin alphabet, and indicate main cities;
  • Speed limit in cities is 60km/h (40mph);
  • Speed limit in "nationals" (single carriageway countryside roads) is 90km/h (55mph);
  • Speed limit on highways (motorways) is 110-120km/h (75mph);
  • If you need a good GPS navigation solution for Ukraine, click here, or just google "GPS Ukraine".

Getting around

FESTIVAL SHUTTLE

Special shuttle-bus services will be operated between the hotel and the festival center. The timetable will be available at the reception of the hotel and on the news desk on the 2nd floor of "Cinema Kyiv".

METRO

Kyiv Metro System is the cheapest, fastest, and most reliable way of transportation. The price for a metro ticket is 2 Hrn (approx. 20 Eurocents). Metro is also a major sightseeing spot for tourists since metro stations have remarkable interiors that reflect modern decorative designs and historical periods of the country.

TAXI

Taxi is comparatively cheap. There are numerous taxi services; orders are taken via phone. A taxi cab can be stopped right on the street simply by waving your hand. The price is to be agreed upon beforehand. If you call the taxi company they usually tell you about the price. Most taxi cabs don't use a meter.
