This year's judges are...

Tony Gatlif
International Jury Head

Director (France)

Tony Gatlif is a well-known director who was born in 1948 in French Algiers, he has a gypsy background and regards himself as the citizen of the world (cosmopolite). Such definitions as “famous” and “director” were not easily and fast introduced to him – moving to Paris and intensive work during lots of years in order to get rid of poverty he used to grown up in, and carve his way to the world of cinematography.

Beginning his career as a shoe-shine boy he had quickly trained himself for an actor and soon he understood that he wants to be a director. And the first positive results of this decision that brought him popularity appeared in his film
LES PRINCES (1983), which has started series of ethnic films and has drawn audience’s attention to the Gypsy themes. Since this film all his subsequent works had a great success among audience.
Besides that he had won the sympathy of spectators he had also awaken an interest to himself among more serious admirers: one of Tony Gatlif’s music films
LATCHO DROM was noticed in Cannes. For the first time, but not the last. Shortly after his film EXILS created a real furore and won Golden Palm in Cannes for the Best Directing. With every his new film Tony Gatlif denies his previous work nevertheless keeping the main line – gypsy themes and much music (to his mind music is his nation’s memory). He rarely works with professional actors regarding them as “unreal”. And as a result he easily produces an “alive” film every time skilfully and amazingly combining acting and life.

Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Vinogradov
Artist (Russia)

Born in 1963 in Moscow. Aleksandr Vinogradov is a Russian contemporary painter and influential artist of the international level, who once was not only unrecognized but also not understood. Currently he works in the art-duo with Vladimir Dubosarskiy. They even graduated from the same educational establishment – Moscow State Art Institute named after Surikov. With its works this avant-garde artists’ union breaks the stereotypes of society in the world of printed images and glamorous dreams. Their cooperation began in 1994 with painting by commission, picturing Russian reality: purple jackets, jeeps and samovars... But when these images, massively replicated, ceased to have any art meaning, they re-appeared and created a paradoxical combination: from now on paintings one could see nude girls rejoicing on the background of birch trees or Stallone drawing Schwarzenegger in a circle of children. Following the requirements of socialist realism, the artists still create radically different. One can recognize the images, but their meaning is different. Pictures are still like “by commission”, but they are not. And only the irony shown by the authors is real.

Vladimir Perisic
Director, screenwriter (Serbia)

Vladimir Perisic was born in Serbia (Belgrade) in 1976. First time that he ran into directing was during his studying at the faculty of theatre arts of the film school La Femis in Paris. There he made his first steps in film making – he produced several short films.

His graduation work, DREMANO OKO (2003), has been already shown at the Cinefondation Selection of the Cannes Film Festival and at many other film enterprises. The film has received a prize as “The Best Film” at the Munich Film School Festival. Then in 2009, Vladimir Perisic shot a new film – ORDINARY PEOPLE, which is presented at the “Molodist” Film Festival in the “Eastern Express” non-competition program. Director turns to the theme of violence, which Yugoslavia has been dealing with during the whole its history and which provokes ordinary young people to the confrontation. Author explores its reasons, a problem of good and evil in war and a question of choice – on what side to be? And in this historically-political dirtiness the director has eventually managed to find a beauty of, one would think, ordinary people.
