DIRECTOR

Born in London in 1926, British director John Schlesinger studied at Oxford and began his career making television documentaries. He transitioned to feature films in 1962, quickly gaining acclaim with DARLING (1965), which earned him his first Oscar nomination. His greatest commercial and critical triumph came with MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969), which won Best Picture and earned Schlesinger the Academy Award for Best Director. In his later career, Schlesinger found renewed artistic fulfillment through stage and opera direction until his death in 2003, at age 77.
